Seminar 08 (October 30, 2024) of the CleanCloud series.
Speaker is Prof. Pavlos Kollias (Stony Brook University in US).
Abstract:
For over 60 years, radars have been a key enabler of scientific discoveries in atmospheric research and have become irreplaceable to weather prediction. Significant advancements in radar technology and digital signal processing have led to the development of sophisticated atmospheric radar systems over this period. Today, thanks to advancements in communications, high performance computing and sensors technology we are ready to revolutionize the way we observe the atmosphere using radars. A roadmap of key radar technologies that aim to overcome traditional limitations and enable new scientific discoveries will be presented. The discussion will present advancements in the sensor technology such as phased-array and deployable antennas, mm- and sub-mm radar systems and how they translate to improved and new measurement capabilities. In addition, the benefits of agile adaptive radar observations through a communication and computational cyberinfrastructure that integrates radars with other observing sensors and numerical models are discussed.
