The Piano Trio No. 7 in B-flat major, Op. 97, known as the “Archduke” Trio, stands as one of the most profound masterpieces in chamber music. When he premiered the piece, here in Vienna in 1814, Beethoven’s hearing was virtually gone, and it would be his final public performance. Beethoven’s ability to transcend personal suffering through composition reflects a universal truth—that, even in the face of immense challenges, there exists within us the capacity to create, reach, and connect in ways that seem beyond possibility.
In this spirit, we three scientists, one of us an ECS, each of different nationality, and all members of the EGU community, offer this performance, acknowledging that our awardees and medallists strive for the same transcendence—through science and the search for truth —that shapes our world.
