💅 From ocean spray to cloud slay: The science behind sea salt aerosols 🌊

The first part of the CleanCloud PIANO campaign took place in Aarhus, Denmark, in June 2025, a fitting location, as perhaps the second “A” in Aarhus could easily stand for aerosols! 🌬

At Aarhus University, researchers simulated aerosols from Arctic and Mediterranean seawater and melted glacial ice from the Arctic in a controlled environment, using cutting-edge instruments like the AEGOR and AURA chambers. From probing cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity to analyzing bioaerosols and ice-nucleating particles, the campaign offered a detailed look into the life cycle of marine aerosols, from fresh to atmospherically aged.

Led by @Merete Bilde, the research team at Aarhus and collaborators from Stockholm University, FORTH and EPFL carried out these unique and ambitious experiments considering every possibility and process, and with remarkable gusto, dedication, and rigor.
