SUPERSTUDIO 2024 - DOMESTICATED FOODSCAPES - EAST LABORATORY - EPFL
Synopsis:
Deer once roamed freely across Switzerland until overhunting caused their extinction in the Middle Ages. Reintroduced over the past two centuries, they became part of Fribourg's cultural identity. However, expanding agriculture and infrastructure confined them to smaller habitats, eventually leading to controlled enclosures. Today, authorities are pushing to revert the farm to bovine production, citing ethical, safety, and economic concerns. This decision has sparked debate, as deer farming holds ecological potential and aligns with regional traditions. Rethinking land use could bridge habitats, reduce the ecological impact of farming, and promote sustainable, local food practices. The future of deer farming challenges how we balance tradition, sustainability, and modern agriculture.
