SUPERSTUDIO 2024 - DOMESTICATED FOODSCAPES - EAST LABORATORY - EPFL
Synopsis:
Lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland’s third-largest lake, is rich in biodiversity but faces challenges from climate change, urbanization, and invasive species like cormorants and quagga mussels. These mussels, introduced from the Black Sea via contaminated boats, disrupt the ecosystem by consuming phytoplankton, leading to fish population declines and economic hardships for fishermen while also invading infrastructure. As the lake’s fish restocking needs are met by the Colombier fish farm, we propose a project at the unused Estavayer facility to transform mussels collected into new ressources. By processing mussel shells into cement powder and larvae into fertilizer, this initiative promotes sustainability and helps control mussel proliferation in the lake.
