As a crucial preliminary to the definition of model categories, I introduce the notion of a morphism that has the left or right lifting property with respect to a fixed set of morphisms in a category.  I also prove an important closure property of the set of all morphisms that have the left (respectively, right) lifting property with respect to a fixed set of morphisms.
