Historically, radiography and computerized tomography (CT) with X-rays and gammas were first used in medicine, but are now firmly established in industry. X-ray radiographs and CT scans are commercially available. Neutron radiography is the neutron analogue to X-ray radiography, as practiced in hospitals to detect broken bones, or in airports to detect metallic items like guns or knives in hand luggages. The only difference is that the neutron contrast between materials is different. The advantage of using neutrons is their high penetration depth and suitable wavelength interval which matches the range of d(hkl) spacings in polycrystalline metallic materials.
